Massage therapy benefits are well identified and proved. With regular massage treatments clients experience a better sense of well-being, fewer aches and pains in the body, reduced stress, increased mobility, better sporting performance, ability to work without discomfort, improved posture, reduced muscle soreness and injury prevention.
Massage can also aid with the injury recovery process. Early and accurate diagnosis is important because it is a major factor in formulating a treatment plan.
Accurate diagnosis is essential if treatments are to be optimised. Diagnosis influences treatment plans, and therefore outcomes in relation to the repair of injury. As result, a poorly diagnosed, poorly treated and poorly rehabilitated condition, may become aggravated or chronic.
At Sydney Sports & Orthopaedic Physiotherapy, patients/clients with injuries are thoroughly diagnosed by a physiotherapist. The massage therapist can then work with a stable, safe condition and with specific information about contraindications, injury states and general cautions.
Taking a lead from the best, we can see that under these conditions the massage therapist is highly directed in his task. He is involved in the treatment of injury in full collaboration with a professional health team.
Furthermore, due to the extended hands-on treatment times of a massage session, the massage practitioner is in a unique position to discover a range of co-factors and influences. These discoveries can make a valuable contribution to the overall diagnosis, treatment and outcome process.
The initial assistance given to the healing process by the therapeutic input of massage includes:
– removing fluids from the fascial planes
– assisting scar tissue to be thinner and more flexible
– assisting blood flow to – and therefore the removal of waste products from – the healing site.
The massage therapist may treat some conditions that he recognise as being within his level of expertise, (tension headaches, sore neck or shoulders, back pain, limited range of motion, regular aches and pains in the body, stress, etc) without involving his clients in further diagnostic referrals.
However, if a client has such a condition that is outside the massage therapist’s scope, he can quickly refer to the physiotherapist working in the room next to his, for further diagnosis and assessment.
Depending on your diagnosis, our massage therapist will use a variety of techniques that might include Remedial massage, Sports or Rehabilitation techniques, Myofascial release, Trigger point, and Deep Tissue work in order to suit your present needs and conditions.
