Osteoarthritis affects over 2.2 million Australians, or 1 in 5 people aged over 45. It is more common in women than men, and while it can affect any joint, it is most commonly present in the knees, hips, hands, feet, and spine. Osteoarthritis is a major cause of pain and early retirement. Risk factors for developing osteoarthritis include age, family history, previous joint injuries, and demanding jobs and sports.
While aging is the largest risk factor, osteoarthritis it is not an inevitable part of growing old. As we age, our biological makeup of joint tissues naturally change, including cartilage rigidity, reduced cartilage regeneration, reduced muscle mass (sarcopenia) and inflammation.
Resistance training reduces osteoarthritis pain and improves joint function. However, starting or returning to exercise can be difficult with the presence of pain. Hence the process should be undertaken thoughtfully and safely to not re-aggravate osteoarthritic joints.
