What are the causes & symptoms of Osteochondritis Dissecans?

Causes

The cause of OCD is still unknown, it is thought that calmative microtrauma (overtraining), especially in children and young adults, may be a reason. But there may be a genetic component too.

Symptoms

  • Pain – especially triggered by increasing physical activity
  • Swelling and Tenderness around the ankle joint
  • Reduced ankle joint range of movement (stiffness)
  • A sensation of weakness or instability in the joint (often secondary to the sensation of pain)
Cracking and joint locking – this only occurs in severe cases

These symptoms are significant if they are PERSISTING despite rest and appropriate treatment.
