We all have a tendency to unconsciously favour one side of the body over the other. Hence, we can feel pain and build up tension which may be visible or palpable more on one side of the body.
Favouring one side isn’t necessary bad, we just need variability in our movement. Here are some habits we commonly exhibit and simple steps to help you find balance:
- If you carry a shoulder bag, try and use a back pack instead. You might want to carry it in your hand or carry the shoulder bag on both shoulders. You could also alternate the sides that you carry the bag on.
- If you have your work monitor on your left side, move it to the right or preferably bring it to the middle. If you use two monitors, consider whether you use one monitor far more than the other and if so, alternate the screens on a weekly basis or every few days.
- If you tend to cross your legs with your right leg to top, switch it to your left leg and at times try not to cross your legs at all.
- If you stand lopsided with most of your weight on right hip, switch it around to the left side or try and stand with even weight distribution on both sides.
- If you sit with your wallet in your back pocket, simply take the wallet out if you are going to sit for a long time and put it in your side pocket, or get into a habit of switching between sides.
If you have tried making these adjustments to your daily routine however you continue to feel lopsided and uncomfortable, come and see a physiotherapist for a thorough assessment.
